Evaluation of gold-based compounds as Plasmodium falciparum aquaglyceroporin inhibitors
An extensive cross-disciplinary study involving computational chemistry, synthesis and in vitro testing returned promising insights on the application of metal complexes for the treatment of drug-resistant malaria. During the investigation, a new target was identified that, when inhibited by a combination of existing drugs, could help to re-sensitize resistance-developing strains. This provides a radical new approach to utilizing medicinal chemistry in developing treatments for this disease. Congratulations Federico Balgera on successfully defending your MSc thesis!
